If you’re dreaming about a Sand Harbor wedding, here’s exactly what you need to know before you start planning.

Hey! I’m Kristin, an elopement photographer and planner who helps couples plan stress-free, unforgettable days.

Sand Harbor is one of the most breathtaking places to elope in Lake Tahoe. The crystal-clear blue water, smooth granite boulders, and glowing sunset light make it one of the most iconic beaches in all of Tahoe.

Sand Harbor is one of the most popular places to elope in Lake Tahoe, but there are a few extra steps involved since it's managed by Nevada State Parks.

For most couples, the process looks like this:

  1. Choose a date and decide whether you'll have guests.
  2. Reserve the Ramada if you're planning a ceremony at Sand Harbor.
  3. Secure any required permits through Nevada State Parks.
  4. Plan around parking, seasonal entry reservations, and crowds.
  5. Finish the day exploring the shoreline and boulders for sunset portraits.

Once the logistics are taken care of, the day itself can be incredibly simple. Most of my couples spend a few minutes exchanging vows at the Ramada, then head out to the beaches, coves, and granite boulders that make Sand Harbor one of the most iconic locations in Lake Tahoe.

As a Lake Tahoe elopement photographer, I help couples navigate the permits, timing, and location planning so they can focus on enjoying the experience instead of worrying about the details.

How to Elope at Sand Harbor - Updated for 2026

To hold a ceremony at Sand Harbor, you’ll need to follow Nevada State Park regulations and ceremonies are required to take place in the designated Ramada ceremony area when a permit is involved.

Here are the basics:
  • A Special Use Permit is required for organized ceremonies
  • The Ramada must be reserved for permitted ceremonies
  • Guest counts are limited
  • Arches are questionable, large setups, amplified sound, or chairs outside of designated areas
  • During peak season, vehicle entry reservations are required for early day access (Registration begins in April, typically ends in October)
  • Popular dates (especially summer and fall) book quickly

Because Sand Harbor is such a high-demand location, planning ahead is key.

I walk my couples through reserving the Ramada and building a timeline that still allows us to explore the boulders and shoreline for those iconic Tahoe portraits so you get the views and a smooth experience.

2026 Sand Harbor Update

  • Ceremonies take place at the Ramada
  • Vehicle reservations may be required during peak season
  • Summer and fall dates book quickly
  • Sunset remains the most popular time for portraits

Best Ceremony Locations at Sand Harbor

THE RAMADA (Designated Ceremony Site)

While ceremonies take place at the Ramada, Sand Harbor offers several incredible areas for portraits, each with a different look and feel.

This is the official ceremony location within Sand Harbor. It’s reservable, structured, and ideal for couples bringing guests. You still get that beautiful Tahoe setting while staying fully within park guidelines.

SHORELINE + BOULDER AREAS

While ceremonies must take place in the Ramada when permitted, we’ll absolutely explore the shoreline and iconic granite boulders for portraits. This is where you get that crystal-blue water and smooth rock backdrop Sand Harbor is known for.

SUNSET WATER VIEWS

Golden hour at Sand Harbor hits differently. The way the light reflects off the water and warms up the rocks? Unreal. This is my favorite time for romantic, glowy portraits after your ceremony.

Choosing the right ceremony setup depends on your guest count, time of day, and how you want the experience to feel.

Working with Kristin was an absolute dream! My husband and I chose Sand Harbor for our wedding after falling in love with the scenery we found online. Once we picked the location, we started searching for a photographer and came across Kristin’s portfolio. We instantly fell in love with her photography and knew she was the perfect fit.

Since we had never been to Lake Tahoe before, we were a little unsure about the elopement process, but Kristin made everything feel effortless and stress-free from start to finish. She truly went above and beyond in every way. Her dedication, talent, and attention to detail exceeded all of our expectations. We are so grateful we chose her!

"Despite the cold weather, Kristin didn’t hesitate to step into the water to capture the most incredible shots of the turquoise lake."

Best Time of Day for a Sand Harbor Elopement

Timing is everything at Sand Harbor.

Midday brings harsh light and heavy beach traffic, especially in summer.

Sunrise and sunset are ideal for:
  • Soft, flattering light
  • Fewer crowds
  • More privacy
  • A more relaxed, intimate atmosphere

Sunset elopements here are next-level. The golden light reflecting off the blue water and warming up the granite boulders? Unreal.

And because Sand Harbor has seasonal entry reservations and limited parking, your timeline directly affects how smooth (or stressful) the experience feels.  Winging it, isn't an option, especially during summer.

I help my couples plan around peak entry times so the day flows easily.

Guest Limits & Restrictions

Sand Harbor is stunning, but it's best suited for intimate ceremonies rather than large gatherings.

Most ceremonies here are ideal for:

• The couple only
• A small handful of guests
• A simple setup that keeps the focus on the scenery

When reserving the Ramada ceremony site, guest counts and park rules must be followed. Large wedding parties, amplified sound, and elaborate decor are not permitted.

That's one of the reasons Sand Harbor works so well for couples who want an intimate, nature-focused elopement with the lake as their backdrop.

If you're planning a larger guest list, there are other Lake Tahoe ceremony locations that offer more flexibility while still providing incredible views.

Why Hire a Sand Harbor Elopement Photographer

Sand Harbor isn’t just beautiful, it’s dynamic.

  • Weather shifts quickly
  • Crowds fluctuate throughout the day
  • Lighting changes fast along the shoreline and boulders
  • Entry rules and reservations vary by season

Hiring a photographer who truly knows Sand Harbor means:

  • Knowing exactly where to go for the best light
  • Planning around peak entry times and parking limits
  • Having backup options if wind or weather rolls in
  • Navigating Ramada reservations and park regulations confidently

Here are a few common things couples ask:

Do you need a permit to elope at Sand Harbor?

Yes. Sand Harbor is located within Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park and the park requires a special use permit for weddings and elopements.

The permit process is usually straightforward, but availability can be limited during the busy summer season. I help couples navigate the permit process and choose the best time and location within Sand Harbor for their ceremony.

What is the best time of day for a Sand Harbor elopement?

Sunset is typically the best time for a Sand Harbor elopement. As the sun drops behind the mountains, the light becomes soft and golden and the lake turns deep blue and turquoise.

Evenings also tend to be less crowded than midday, which makes it easier to find quiet spots for your ceremony and photos.

When is the best time of year to elope at Sand Harbor?

Late spring through early fall is the most popular time to elope at Sand Harbor because the weather is warm and the lake is calm.  Summer offers the classic Lake Tahoe look with bright blue water, lots of crowds, while early fall can be quieter with fewer visitors and beautiful golden evening light.

Can you elope at Sand Harbor in Lake Tahoe?

Yes! Sand Harbor is one of the most beautiful places to elope in Lake Tahoe. The beach is known for its bright turquoise water, massive granite boulders, and incredible sunset views. Couples can have a simple ceremony right along the shoreline with the lake and mountains surrounding them.

Sand Harbor Elopement FAQs

Can we bring guests to our Sand Harbor elopement?

Yes, but guest counts are usually limited depending on the permit. Many couples choose to bring just a few close family members or friends so the day still feels intimate and relaxed.

Are dogs allowed at Sand Harbor?

Unfortunately dogs are not allowed on the main Sand Harbor beaches because it is part of a Nevada State Park. If including your dog in your elopement is important, there are several other beautiful Lake Tahoe locations that are dog-friendly.  Dogs are allowed on paved pathways in the off-season.

How crowded does Sand Harbor get?

Sand Harbor is one of the most popular and most crowded locations in Lake Tahoe, especially in the summer. The beach can fill up quickly during the day.  That’s why couples choose a later ceremony time closer to sunset, when crowds begin to thin out and the lighting becomes incredible for photos.

Do you help plan Sand Harbor elopements?

Yes! I help couples plan their entire elopement experience, including helping with permits, building a relaxed timeline, scouting the best ceremony spots, and guiding you through the day so everything feels easy and stress-free.
