How to Choose the Best Place to Elope in the US
With so many incredible places to elope in the US, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Yosemite looks amazing. So does Lake Tahoe. Then you stumble across Glacier National Park or Sedona and suddenly you have twenty browser tabs open.
The truth is, there isn’t one “best” place to elope. The best location is the one that fits the experience you want to have together.
Here are a few things to think about before choosing your destination.
Scenery
Close your eyes for a second and picture your wedding day. What do you see?
Are you standing on a mountain overlook? Walking barefoot along the beach? Surrounded by towering redwoods? Watching the sunset over a crystal-clear lake?
The scenery sets the tone for your entire day, so choose a place that feels like you, not just somewhere that’s trending on Instagram.
Accessibility
Not every incredible view requires a long hike.
Some couples dream of backpacking to a remote alpine lake, while others would rather drive to a scenic overlook and spend more time relaxing together. Neither is better than the other.
Think about how adventurous you actually want your wedding day to be. Your elopement should feel exciting, not exhausting.
Permits and Marriage Requirements
Many of the best elopement locations in the US require permits for ceremonies, especially National Parks and some state parks. Every location has different rules about guest counts, ceremony locations, and photography.

Lake Tahoe is one of my absolute favorite places to photograph elopements, and it’s easy to see why.
It’s one of the few places where you can watch the sun set over crystal-clear blue water while being surrounded by snow-capped mountains and towering pine trees. Whether you’re exchanging vows on a quiet beach, hiking to a scenic overlook, or ending the evening with champagne by the lake, Tahoe offers an incredible variety of experiences without spending hours driving between locations.
Another reason couples love Lake Tahoe is that every season feels completely different. Just outside of Lake Tahoe, Truckee and Donner Lake offer a quieter mountain experience while still providing incredible scenery.

Ceremony Permits & Location Permission
