This day had everything I love about Mount Shasta elopement photography: incredible scenery, personal moments, and a couple ready to have some freaking fun. J iced her groom immediately after their first look—which, I learned, means surprising him with a Smirnoff Ice that he then has to get down on one knee and chug.

So… that pretty much set the tone for their entire Mount Shasta elopement.

There were mountain views, a hike through the river, private vows, a swim, incredible carnitas, and a sunset that turned the volcanic landscape pink. But what made this day so special was how much of their everyday life they brought into it.

J + C are locals. They chose to get married where they live, surrounded by places that already mean something to them. Their river spot. Their favorite Mexican restaurant. The mountain they call home.

Rick and I got to spend the day doing Mount Shasta elopement photography with J + C it all, and honestly I can’t stop thinking about it!

A First Look Beneath Mount Shasta—and a Smirnoff Surprise

We started with their first look and mountain views, followed almost immediately by J’s surprise for C.

One knee. One Smirnoff Ice. A whole lot of laughing.

I love when couples bring their humor into their wedding day. This was such a fun way to start, and it gave us a pretty good idea of what we were in for.

Their Mount Shasta elopement wasn’t going to be a day spent standing around smiling for the camera. They had places to take us, things they wanted to do, and plenty of celebrating ahead.

Private Vows at Their Special River Spot

After the first look and the icing, J + C took us to their special river spot for their ceremony.

Getting there meant hiking through the river, which was part of the experience. We were following them into a place they already knew and loved, rather than choosing somewhere only for the photos.

They exchanged their vows there, with the river around them, and afterward? They went straight in for a dip.

Married, happy, and ready to get in the water. I freaking loved it.

That’s one of the things that stood out most about their day: they were so present. They were enjoying being together, sharing their places with us, and doing exactly what they wanted to do after getting married.

If swimming is something you love doing together, it can be part of your elopement too. We can plan around it, leave time to change, and choose a location and conditions that make sense for your day.

Newlyweds sit together in a clear, rocky river in their wedding clothes, with forest-lined banks and Mount Shasta in the distance.

Carnitas and Drinks at Their Favorite Mexican Restaurant

After the river, they took us to their favorite Mexican restaurant in town.

And let me tell you—the carnitas were hands-down AMAZING.

They told us this was their bar spot, so of course there were more drinks. It was another little piece of their life woven into the day, and I loved getting to experience it with them.

This is why I love full-day and multi-day elopements. There’s time to sit down, eat a real meal, laugh, and enjoy being married. You can go to your favorite restaurant instead of trying to squeeze lunch into the drive between locations.

A meal can be a whole part of the celebration. For J + C, it meant good food, drinks, and a stop at a place they already loved.

Lanterns, Lava Rock, and a Pink Sunset on Mount Shasta

We finished the evening as far up the road on Mount Shasta as we could go.

The landscape up there was unreal: volcanic terrain, lava rocks, dramatic clouds, and mountains glowing pink as the sun went down. The two enjoyed some cake and champagne at the beginning of golden hour.

They had lanterns, and we could hear drumming in the distance. Between the sound, the changing light, and those mountain views, it was such an incredible way to finish their wedding day.

We had already spent time at the river and in town, and now we were surrounded by this completely different landscape. That variety is one of my favorite things about photographing an elopement around Mount Shasta.

And on this evening, we got to enjoy it without crowds around us. There was room to take it in, let the light change, and keep photographing as the sunset unfolded.

Aerial Elopement Photos—and a Pup With Other Plans

THIS is why I wanted aerial photos at Mount Shasta.

From above, J + C looked so tiny beneath the mountain. The pink light across the volcanic landscape, the glowing clouds, and the two of them standing together showed just how huge their surroundings were.

What you can’t see in that peaceful photo is their pup chasing my drone around and trying to kill it.

Rick had to land the drone while I acted like a complete fool to convince their pup to chase me instead. Apparently, distracting dogs is now part of my job description.

That’s also a pretty good example of how we work together as a two-photographer team. We can both photograph, or one of us can keep shooting from the ground while the other captures aerial images. We switch throughout the day—and sometimes one of us gets assigned dog distraction duty.

For this day, the aerial photos added a view of the landscape that we couldn’t get from the ground. And thankfully, the drone survived.

Why a Full-Day Elopement Gave Them Time for All of This

Their day included a first look, a private ceremony, a swim, a restaurant stop, and sunset photos on the mountain.

Each part had time of its own. They could laugh through the first look, enjoy the river after their vows, sit down for carnitas, and finish the evening watching the mountains turn pink.

When I help plan an elopement timeline, I think about more than photography. Driving, walking, meals, changing clothes, and taking a breather all need room too.

Full-day coverage gives us more space for those things. A multi-day elopement can give you even more time to explore different places and spread out the experiences you want to include.

J + C’s day is such a good example of how much meaning those everyday favorites can bring to a wedding. Their favorite food and their special river spot were just as much a part of the story as the mountain views.

Planning Your Own Mount Shasta Elopement

Mount Shasta deserves so much more attention as a California elopement location.

This one day took us from mountain views to a river, into town for a meal, and back up the mountain for volcanic landscapes and sunset. And every stop connected to something J + C loved.

As a Mount Shasta elopement photographer and planner, I help you find locations, connect with vendors, understand permit requirements, and put together a timeline with time to enjoy it all.

You can bring me the places you already love, like these two did, or we can figure out where to go together.

For more location ideas and planning details, explore my Mount Shasta elopement guide. Then reach out so we can start talking about your day.

On the drive back, Rick and I couldn’t stop talking about how incredible it had been and how happy J + C were. Then the happy, blissful, “it’s over now” tears started happening out of nowhere. 😭

I truly love what I do, and I’m so grateful these two trusted us to photograph such a personal day. 🤍

Mount Shasta Elopement FAQs

Can we include our dog in our Mount Shasta elopement?

Yes! J + C brought their pup along, and we even had a little dog-versus-drone situation at sunset. 😂 If you want to include your dog, let me know early so we can choose locations that allow dogs and plan for their comfort throughout the day.

Can we go swimming on our elopement day?

Absolutely, if the location and conditions are suitable! These two went for a dip right after their river ceremony. If swimming is on your list, we’ll leave time for it and plan for towels, dry clothes, and changing afterward. Water temperature, currents, and access will help us decide where and when.

How much photography coverage do we need for a Mount Shasta elopement?

J + C had eight hours of coverage, which gave us time for their first look, river ceremony, swim, restaurant stop, and sunset mountain photos. If you want several locations and time to enjoy a meal together, a full-day elopement is a great option. I’ll help you choose coverage based on what you want to include and the travel time between locations.

Do we have to hike far to get beautiful elopement photos?

You don’t have to build your whole day around a long hike. J + C’s day included hiking through the river and driving up the mountain for sunset. We’ll talk about how much walking you’re comfortable with and choose locations that fit.

Can we stop at a restaurant during our elopement?

Yes, and I highly recommend making time for food! J + C took us to their favorite Mexican restaurant for carnitas and drinks. Your wedding day can include a favorite local spot, a picnic, or a relaxed meal together. We’ll build it into the timeline.

Can we have drone photos taken at Mount Shasta?

Drone photography may be an option where flights are permitted and conditions allow. J + C’s aerial photos captured them beneath the mountain as the landscape turned pink at sunset. Drone coverage depends on the specific location, flight restrictions, weather, and safe flying conditions.

Do you help plan Mount Shasta elopements?

Yes! I’m a Mount Shasta elopement photographer and planner. I help with location ideas, vendor referrals, permit guidance, and a custom timeline. You can bring me places you already love, like J + C did, or we can explore options together.
