How to Get Your Marriage License for a San Francisco City Hall Elopement

Before you can get married at City Hall, you’ll need a valid California marriage license. Your license appointment and ceremony appointment are separate reservations, so make sure you book both if you’re getting your license in San Francisco.

Here’s what to know:

• Current San Francisco license fee: $129. Confirm the fee when booking.
• What to bring: Both of you must attend and bring valid government-issued photo IDs.
• How long it’s valid: Your ceremony must take place within 90 days after the license is issued.
• Residency: You don’t need to live in California or be a U.S. citizen.

A civil ceremony is the simplest way to get married at San Francisco City Hall. The County Clerk provides your officiant, and you can celebrate with just the two of you or a few guests.

You don’t need to rent a private space to enjoy the beautiful building and take wedding photos throughout City Hall.

What You Need to Know

• Ceremony fee: Currently $113, separate from your marriage license.
• Availability: Monday through Friday, by appointment.
• Guests: Up to six people, including your photographer, witness, and any children.
• Officiant: Provided by the County Clerk.
• What to bring: Your valid California marriage license and government-issued photo IDs.
• Witness: A public marriage license requires at least one witness. A confidential marriage license does not.

If you’re coming without guests, I can be your witness and photograph your ceremony.

Is the Ceremony Private?

Civil ceremonies take place during public hours, so other couples and visitors may be nearby. Your reservation does not give you exclusive use of the ceremony area.

The County Clerk chooses the ceremony location. The Rotunda is a familiar setting, but a specific spot isn’t guaranteed.

The ceremony is brief, but there’s plenty to photograph before and afterward. We can plan time for a first look, portraits on the grand staircase, and photos in the galleries.

I recommend arriving early enough to allow for traffic, parking, security, and check-in. Follow the arrival instructions in your appointment confirmation, and keep some breathing room in your timeline so a delay doesn’t leave you rushing.

Private Wedding Options at San Francisco City Hall

If you want a reserved ceremony space, more room for guests, or your own officiant, City Hall offers private wedding rentals through its Events Office.

These reservations are separate from the County Clerk’s civil ceremonies. You’ll arrange your own officiant and marriage license.

One-Hour Weddings: Mayor’s Balcony or Fourth Floor Gallery

The one-hour wedding rental is currently $1,000 and is available Monday through Friday. You can reserve the Mayor’s Balcony or a Fourth Floor Gallery.

Your chosen ceremony area is reserved for your wedding, but the rest of City Hall remains open to the public. This gives you a dedicated space to exchange vows without renting the entire building.

The Fourth Floor North Gallery is my favorite recommendation. Its tall windows and beautiful architecture make a lovely setting for your ceremony and photos.

A few details to plan around:

• The rental allows up to 100 guests, although you can bring a much smaller group.
• Chairs cost extra. The Mayor’s Balcony seats up to 40, and the Fourth Floor Galleries seat up to 60.
• You’ll need to provide your own officiant.
• Food and beverage service isn’t permitted during the one-hour rental.
• Available ceremony times depend on the space you choose.

Afterward, you can head out for lunch, celebrate with your guests, or continue exploring San Francisco together.

If getting married on a Saturday is a priority, City Hall offers a two-hour wedding rental for $5,000, with ceremonies on the Grand Staircase.

This is a separate event rental, rather than a regular civil ceremony appointment. The two-hour window includes setup and cleanup, and you’ll need your own officiant.

The rental accommodates up to 200 guests and includes chairs, insurance, and basic building services. Photography, flowers, attire, and other vendors are separate costs.

For a small elopement with a flexible date, a weekday ceremony may fit your plans more easily. If you want to keep a Saturday date, we can discuss this rental or explore other San Francisco ceremony locations.

For a civil ceremony, the current San Francisco marriage license fee is $129, and the ceremony fee is $113. That puts the basic legal costs at $242, before photography, clothing, travel, and other expenses.

A private ceremony adds a venue rental: currently $1,000 for a weekday one-hour wedding or $5,000 for a two-hour Saturday wedding. You’ll also need your own officiant.

San Francisco City Hall Elopement FAQs

Do we need separate appointments for our marriage license and ceremony?

Yes. If you’re getting your license through the San Francisco County Clerk, you’ll need to reserve both a license appointment and a civil ceremony appointment. Booking one does not automatically book the other.

Can we bring a marriage license from another California county?

Yes. Your license doesn’t have to come from San Francisco, but it must be a valid, unexpired California marriage license. Getting it closer to home can save you an extra appointment during your trip.

Can we get married at City Hall on a Saturday?

Regular County Clerk civil ceremonies are offered on weekdays. City Hall’s private two-hour wedding rental is available on Saturdays and currently costs $5,000. You’ll need to arrange your own officiant for that rental.

If you want a small Saturday elopement, we can also explore other ceremony locations around San Francisco.

How many guests can we bring to a civil ceremony?

You can bring up to six people, including your photographer, witness, and children. The two of you do not count toward that six-person limit.

If you want more guests, you’ll need to arrange a wedding rental through City Hall Events.

Can you be our witness?

Yes! If you’re coming without guests, I can photograph your ceremony and sign as your witness.

A public marriage license requires at least one witness. A confidential marriage license does not require a witness.

Can we choose exactly where our civil ceremony happens?

The County Clerk determines the location, so a civil ceremony reservation does not guarantee the Rotunda or Grand Staircase.

If you want a specific reserved ceremony space, look at the private rental options. Weekday one-hour weddings offer the Mayor’s Balcony or a Fourth Floor Gallery.

Will we have City Hall to ourselves?

During a civil ceremony or weekday one-hour wedding, City Hall remains open to the public.

A one-hour rental reserves your chosen ceremony area, but other couples and visitors may still be elsewhere in the building. We’ll work around the activity when taking portraits.

How much photography coverage do we need?

My packages start at four hours. We’ll build your timeline around your ceremony, portraits, and how you want to celebrate afterward.

If you want getting-ready photos, several locations, time with guests, and sunset portraits, I recommend longer coverage. I’ll help you choose based on your plans and travel time.

Can we take photos elsewhere after City Hall?

Absolutely. We can include city streets, waterfront views, or coastal locations in your plans.

We’ll choose stops that work with your coverage and account for transportation, parking, and the time of day.

Can we include personal vows?

We can plan a separate moment for personal vows before or after your civil ceremony. This gives you time to say what you want to say without relying on the format of the County Clerk’s ceremony.
