(By Kristin Smith Photography)

Yosemite National Park is one of the most breathtaking destinations for an intimate wedding—massive granite cliffs, dreamy waterfalls, and endless adventure. If you’re envisioning exchanging vows with Half Dome in the background or trekking to a secluded alpine meadow, you’re in the right place. In this guide, I’ll walk you through exactly how to plan an adventure elopement in Yosemite so your day is effortless, stress-free, and filled with unforgettable moments.

How to plan an adventure elopement in Yosemite –

Why Elope in Yosemite?

There’s truly nothing quite like an adventure elopement in Yosemite. Whether you want to exchange vows at sunrise on Glacier Point or chase waterfalls in Yosemite Valley, this park offers endless opportunities for an unforgettable and breathtaking elopement experience.

Here’s why Yosemite is an incredible place to elope:

Epic landscapes – towering cliffs, giant sequoias, and stunning alpine lakes.
Adventure at every turn – from easy-access locations to full-day hikes.
A place that feels truly wild – no crowded venues, just you two and nature.

But, before we dive into planning, let’s talk about permits, because that’s one of the first things you’ll need to take care of!

How to Obtain a Special Use Permit for Your Yosemite Elopement

If you’re planning an adventure elopement in Yosemite, then you’ll need a Special Use Permit. In fact, this is required for any wedding or elopement taking place in the park—even if it’s just the two of you.

Here’s how to get your permit:

1️⃣ Choose your elopement date & location – Yosemite has designated ceremony sites, but some locations allow for more flexibility.
2️⃣ Apply through the National Park Service – The fee is usually around $150-$200.
3️⃣ Submit your request early – Some locations book up fast, especially in peak season!

Once your permit is approved, you’re officially set to elope in one of the most stunning places on Earth.

Best Locations for an Adventure Elopement in Yosemite

Yosemite is HUGE, so choosing the perfect spot can feel overwhelming. But don’t worry—because that’s where I come in! As an elopement photographer and planner, I personally help my couples find the best location that truly fits their vibe.

Here are some of my favorite Yosemite elopement spots:

🌄 Glacier Point

  • Best for: Epic sunset views, easy access
  • What to know: Closed in winter, but summer and fall are perfect.

🌿 Taft Point

  • Best for: Dramatic cliff views, a short hike
  • What to know: It requires a 2.2-mile round-trip hike but is SO worth it.

🌲 Cathedral Beach

  • Best for: Elopements with a waterfall view & easy access
  • What to know: Close to Yosemite Valley, perfect for a relaxed ceremony.

💦 Vernal Falls Trail

  • Best for: Couples who love hiking & waterfalls
  • What to know: Can get misty, but so magical in spring and early summer.

Best Time of Year for a Yosemite Adventure Elopement

Yosemite changes dramatically with the seasons, so choosing the right time of year depends on your vision.

  • Spring (April – June) 🌸 – Waterfalls are at peak flow, but some high-elevation spots might still have snow.
  • Summer (July – August) ☀️ – Warm weather, but expect crowds in Yosemite Valley.
  • Fall (September – November) 🍂 – Best time for golden colors and fewer people.
  • Winter (December – March) ❄️ – Magical snow-covered landscapes, but some areas (like Glacier Point) are closed.

What to Pack for an Adventure Elopement in Yosemite

Yosemite is an adventure elopement paradise, which means you’ll want to be prepared!

Must-Have Packing List:

Hiking boots – Comfortable for exploring (bonus if they look cute with your outfit!).
Layers – Even in summer, mornings and evenings can be chilly.
Headlamp – If you’re eloping at sunrise or sunset, this is a must.
Vow book – A small but meaningful keepsake.
Champagne & snacks – Because celebrating with a toast in the mountains is a vibe.

Making Your Yosemite Elopement Stress-Free

Planning an adventure elopement in Yosemite can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be! The key is having a solid plan, backup options, and someone who knows the park inside and out.

That’s exactly where I come in! I help my couples with:

Location scouting
Creating a seamless timeline
Navigating permits & logistics
Capturing all the real, unfiltered moments
